The Kathmandu Valley Rim Running Tour is a multi-day trail running adventure that follows the scenic ridgelines encircling the Kathmandu Valley, linking iconic viewpoints, forested hills, and culturally rich settlements. Beginning from the historic hilltop of Swayambhunath, the route climbs through the lush Nagarjun forest to Jamacho and continues along quiet ridge trails toward Suryachaur. Over the following days, runners traverse the northern hills via Chisapani and Jhule to reach the renowned sunrise viewpoint of Nagarkot, before continuing eastward toward Lakhuri Bhanjyang. The journey then shifts south across remote ridges to Pharping, blending natural landscapes with sacred pilgrimage sites. The final stage crosses the panoramic summit of Chandragiri Hill, descends through Dhanchowk Danda, and completes the full rim circuit back at Swayambhunath. Covering diverse terrain at moderate elevations, the tour combines endurance trail running with sweeping Himalayan views, forest trails, and authentic cultural encounters, offering a comprehensive circumnavigation of the Kathmandu Valley on foot.

The opening stage begins from the hilltop stupa of Swayambhunath, climbing steadily through forested trails inside the Nagarjun area. The ascent to Jamacho is the first major climb of the tour, following stone steps and shaded singletrack. From the summit ridge, the trail descends gradually toward Mukhu village before traversing rolling terrain toward the open meadows of Suryachaur. The day combines sustained climbing with runnable ridge sections, setting the tone for the rim circuit.

Leaving Suryachaur, the route follows forested ridges with gentle climbs and descents toward Chisapani. The trail continues through traditional villages and scenic hilltops around Jhule, maintaining a steady ridge-line profile. The final approach to Nagarkot offers gradual elevation gain and expansive Himalayan views. This day features continuous undulating terrain ideal for sustained trail running.

The third stage moves along the eastern rim, traversing quieter ridges and farmland. The route includes rolling climbs through pine forests and local settlements, with occasional descents into saddles before climbing again toward Lakhuri Bhanjyang. The terrain is less technical and allows for longer runnable stretches.

This stage transitions toward the southern rim of the valley, crossing undulating ridges and terraced farmland. The route includes gradual climbs followed by longer descents through forested slopes toward Pharping.
